Pipex were commissioned to supply and fabricate PX-HD FRP solid top grating trench covers.
These solid topped Fibre/Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP/FRP) trench covers were used because the trench was originally set for 75mm concrete covers and National Grid could not make the rebate larger to accommodate the 115mm bridge deck system as it contained a high voltage cable.
As the trench has to cross a road, it is driven over more than a standard crossing. This coupled with the fact that there is a high voltage cable running the length of the trench meant that a non conductive, high strength to weight ratio solid top option that prevents anything falling into the trench and damaging the cable was the only viable solution.
